Architectural Trade-offs in Multi-Provider LLM Routing: Speed, Cost, and Fallbacks
How Multi-LLM Chat routes prompts dynamically across Google Gemini, OpenAI, and Anthropic with automatic fallbacks and client-side token analytics.
Relying on a single AI model provider is an operational vulnerability. Every engineering team eventually experiences API outages, sudden latency spikes, or quota exhaustion during peak hours. Furthermore, different models excel at different tasks: Gemini 1.5 Flash delivers blistering speed for summarization, while Claude 3.5 Sonnet leads in intricate architectural coding.
I built Multi-LLM Chat (chat.ladestack.in) as an intelligent, client-side routing gateway. It allows developers to test, benchmark, and route queries across multiple providers within a single unified interface.
The Trilemma of Model Selection
When designing an automated routing system, three competing vectors must be balanced:
- Time to First Token (TTFT): Crucial for interactive chat.
- Cost per 1,000 Tokens: Varies by up to 40x between lightweight flash models and frontier reasoning models.
- Context Window Depth: Ranging from 8k tokens to over 1,000,000 tokens.
Implementing Deterministic Client-Side Fallback Chains
Multi-LLM Chat implements an asynchronous fallback circuit breaker directly in the client:
export interface ModelRoute {
provider: 'gemini' | 'openai' | 'anthropic';
modelId: string;
timeoutMs: number;
}
export async function executeResilientInference(
routes: ModelRoute[],
prompt: string,
keys: Record<string, string>
): Promise<ReadableStream<Uint8Array>> {
for (const route of routes) {
const key = keys[route.provider];
if (!key) continue;
try {
const controller = new AbortController();
const timeout = setTimeout(() => controller.abort(), route.timeoutMs);
const stream = await callProviderApi(route, prompt, key, controller.signal);
clearTimeout(timeout);
return stream;
} catch (err) {
console.warn(`Route ${route.provider}/${route.modelId} failed. Falling back to next provider.`, err);
}
}
throw new Error('All model routing candidates failed to respond within threshold.');
}
Transparent Token Analytics
By running prompt token counters locally before transmission, developers can visualize the exact financial cost of each query before hitting Send. Multi-provider flexibility transforms AI from an expensive mystery into a reliable engineering utility.
